"The individual has always had to struggle to keep from being overwhelmed by the tribe. If you try it, you will be lonely often, and sometimes frightened. But no price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself."

-- F. NIetzsche

Some days, he just nails it... I've posted here and elsewhere about my own experiences growing up, and my distrust of group-think and collective identity, and this pretty much says what I've been thinking all these years.

I think that this saying can likewise also be applied to the Heathen community as well ... *cough*

See, now :) Where this becomes Interesting is when the group is *made up of* individuals. My personal tribe works this way, and it's a trend here in East Coast Asatru - hardy, rugged individualists banding together into tightly-knit groups which BOTH have their own group identity *and* individual identities.

Feel the Northeast Asatru love ;)

That seems to be how we're doing it in the Rocky Mountain West/Southwest, too - the folks I'm closest to these days share my distrust of groupthink (and some are even worse than I am...), but we do enjoy getting together for blots, sumbels, and other occasions as a group.

Our personal "tribes" tend to be family units, either married couples or committed partnerships. There are a couple of couples with children in the broader community, but they tend to group together more, since their community needs are a little different than those of us who remain child-free. We get together at this inter-city level from time to time as well - usually for major seasonal blots a couple of times a year, barring other travel plans...
